Project Cornerstone’s Hoover ABC Program

Asset Building Champions (ABC) Program is literature-based program where volunteers are trained in the developmental assets model and read specially selected books and lead discussions and activities about important issues like respect, tolerance, honesty, peaceful conflict resolution, taking a stand against bullying behaviors and refusing to participate in gossip.

Project Cornerstone’s ABC Program at Hoover was first started in April 2013 with 14 parent readers as a pilot program. We are in our sixth year with a strong team of 31 readers.

One of the key goals of the program is to increase the number of trusted, caring adults in the life of every Hoover student. We follow two curricula – an exclusive Kinder curriculum and the Asset Year curriculum for the 1st – 5th graders. The program aims to create a common language and vocabulary about student respect and behavior expectations among all members of the school community – students, parents, teachers and staff. This helps to contribute towards a positive school climate where every student feels valued and supported to achieve and thrive.
